What Is BTMS 50 and Why Is It in Conditioner Bars?

If you’ve looked at a conditioner bar recipe and found BTMS-50 at the top of the ingredient list, often at 50% or more of the formula, and had no idea what it was, you’re not alone. It sounds technical, the name contains the word “methosulfate” which sets off alarm bells for anyone who reads ingredient lists carefully, and there’s not much plain-language explanation available for home formulators.

This article covers what BTMS-50 actually is, what it does in a conditioner bar, why it conditions without coating the hair the way silicones do, and what the methosulfate name actually means. I’ll also cover the difference between BTMS-50 and BTMS-25, since both appear in recipes and the distinction confuses a lot of people.

BTMS-50 stands for behentrimonium methosulfate and cetyl alcohol, combined at a 50% active concentration. The name is a mouthful, but breaking it down makes it more approachable.

Behentrimonium refers to a long-chain fatty compound derived from rapeseed oil (also known as canola oil). It’s a plant-derived ingredient, which is worth noting for anyone sourcing it under the assumption that anything with a chemical-sounding name must be synthetic.

Methosulfate is the salt form of the compound, which is the chemical structure that makes it stable and effective as a conditioning agent. More on what this word actually means shortly.

And cetyl alcohol (which you may recognise from the shampoo bar formula) is the fatty alcohol that makes up the other 50% of the ingredient. Its presence in BTMS 50 is why you’ll sometimes see recipes that call for BTMS-50 without additional cetyl alcohol, and others (like mine) that add extra cetyl alcohol to increase bar firmness.

In its raw form, BTMS-50 arrives as small pale yellow pellets with almost no discernible scent. It’s an unassuming ingredient that gives little visual clue about what it does in the finished bar.

This is the part that matters most for understanding why conditioner bars made with BTMS-50 feel different from silicone-based products.

Hair carries a slight negative electrical charge, particularly when it’s damaged, dry, or freshly washed. This negative charge increases when the hair cuticle is open, which happens during washing, especially with more alkaline products.

BTMS-50 is a cationic (positively charged) conditioning emulsifier. Opposites attract, and so BTMS-50 is drawn to the negatively charged hair shaft and binds to it. This binding deposits conditioning actives directly onto the hair where they’re needed, rather than sitting as a surface film.

The practical result is what I noticed after my very first with my first batch: hair that felt moisturised rather than coated. Like my actual hair, not like something had been applied to it. It’s a different sensation from silicone-based conditioners, which work by coating the hair shaft to create the appearance of smoothness. The improvement from silicones is real but it’s largely cosmetic. The improvement from BTMS-50 is functional: the conditioning is happening at the hair shaft itself rather than on top of it.

The penetrative quality I noticed – that sense that the moisture was actually in the hair rather than sitting on it – is consistent with how BTMS-50 works mechanically. It’s not surface-level conditioning. It deposits and stays.

This is where people who use apps like Lyka or read ingredient lists carefully tend to pause, and it’s worth addressing directly.

“Methosulfate” sounds like “sulphate,” which triggers concern for anyone who’s been avoiding SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate) or SLES (sodium laureth sulphate) in their shampoo. The association is understandable but the chemistry is different.

Sulphates like SLS and SLES are anionic (negatively charged) surfactants used for cleansing. They’re effective at removing oil and they produce abundant lather. The concern with them is their potential for irritation at higher concentrations and their stripping effect on the scalp — which is why the shampoo bars on this site use SCI instead.

As mentioned, behentrimonium methosulfate is a cationic (positively charged) conditioning agent. It has a completely different molecular structure, a different mechanism of action, and a different safety profile. The “sulfate” in the name refers to the salt form of the compound (a common and innocuous chemical naming convention) not to the cleansing sulphates associated with irritation.

To put it plainly: BTMS-50 is not in the same category as SLS or SLES. Comparing them because both names contain “sulphate” or “sulfate” is like avoiding table salt because sodium sounds like the sodium in sodium lauryl sulphate. The names overlap; the chemistry doesn’t.

BTMS-50 is approved for cosmetic use in Australia, Europe, Japan, and the USA. It appears on very few “avoid” lists in the natural beauty community, and those that do flag it are typically conflating it with cleansing sulphates by name rather than by function. It’s specifically recommended by many clean beauty formulators as a silicone alternative, which is exactly how I’m using it.

Both appear in conditioner bar recipes and the distinction is worth understanding before you order.

BTMS-25 contains behentrimonium methosulfate at 25% active concentration, combined with cetearyl alcohol (a blend of cetyl and stearyl alcohols). It’s a softer, more fluid emulsifier that produces a lighter, creamier texture in the finished product. It’s sometimes preferred for leave-in conditioners, lighter rinse-off conditioners, and formulas for fine hair where a heavy conditioning effect would weigh the hair down.

BTMS-50 contains behentrimonium methosulfate at 50% active concentration, combined with cetyl alcohol. The higher active concentration produces a firmer, more structured emulsifier that’s better suited to solid bar formulation. It gives the bar more body and produces a more intensive conditioning effect, which suits normal to dry hair well.

For a solid conditioner bar, BTMS-50 is the standard choice. BTMS 25 can be used in bar formulations but typically requires adjusting other hardening ingredients to compensate for the softer base. For a beginner formula, BTMS-50 is the more forgiving and predictable starting point.

The melt phase of a conditioner bar takes significantly longer than the melt phase of a shampoo bar, but the BTMS-50 is not the main reason.

The BTMS-50 melts first, but combined with cetyl alcohol, shea butter, and jojoba oil all melting together, the first phase of a conditioner bar takes a decent amount longer than the equivalent shampoo bar melt phase.

My experience: from getting ingredients ready to bars poured was a full hour for a two-bar batch. That’s not a problem, it’s just worth knowing before you start so you’re not standing at the stove wondering if something has gone wrong. Nothing has. It just takes time.

The fully melted first phase is slightly yellow (the colour coming from the BTMS-50 pellets) and liquid. As it cools it will go opaque and become whiter as it begins to thicken.

One important process note from my first batch: do not whisk the mixture at any stage. I tried to use a whisk to break up clay clumps during the combining phase and inadvertently whipped air into the mixture, nearly doubling its volume and producing a squishy, aerated bar. At 57% of the conditioner bar formula, BTMS-50 is the dominant ingredient by a significant margin. This is normal for solid conditioner formulations because it needs to be present in high enough concentration to deliver a useful conditioning effect and to provide the emulsifying structure that holds the bar together.

The cetyl alcohol at 19% provides additional firmness and emolliency. The shea butter contributes richness. The jojoba, glycerine, and D-panthenol add conditioning depth and moisture retention. The kaolin clay provides slip and mild clarifying properties to prevent buildup.

This depends on how you define natural, and it’s worth being honest about rather than defaulting to marketing language.

BTMS-50 is derived from rapeseed oil, which is a natural source. It undergoes chemical processing to produce the final ingredient so it doesn’t exist in nature in the form you buy it. By the strictest definition of “natural” (unprocessed or minimally processed plant material), BTMS-50 doesn’t qualify.

By the more common cosmetic industry definition which is naturally derived, plant-based origin, no petrochemicals, it qualifies comfortably. It’s the same position as SCI in the shampoo bar: derived from coconut oil, processed to produce the surfactant, genuinely plant-based in origin.

If your goal is to avoid silicones, synthetic polymers, and petrochemical-derived ingredients, BTMS-50 is appropriate. If your goal is truly unprocessed natural ingredients, solid conditioner bars of any kind are probably not your destination – the chemistry of effective hair conditioning requires some degree of processing to produce ingredients that actually work.

I’m comfortable with BTMS-50 in my formula for the same reasons I’m comfortable with SCI in the shampoo bar. The origin is plant-based, the safety profile is well established, and the ingredient does something genuinely useful that I can’t replicate with a simpler substitute.

At $42 for one kilogram it’s the most expensive primary ingredient I use across both the shampoo and conditioner bar formulas, though given it’s used at 57% of a 500g batch (285g per batch), a 1kg bag covers approximately 3.5 full batches of 17 to 18 bars before reordering.

Look for cosmetic-grade BTMS-50 specifically. The grade matters for skin and hair application, and a reputable cosmetic ingredient supplier will have the appropriate safety data sheet available.
