Syndet Shampoo Bar Equipment: What You Need and What You Don’t
One of the genuine advantages of syndet shampoo bars over lye-based soap is the equipment list. Lye-based soap making requires dedicated equipment that should never be used for food again including caustic-rated containers, goggles, specific gloves, separate utensils. Once they touch lye, they’re soap-making equipment permanently.
Syndet bars require no such separation. The equipment you need is standard kitchen equipment, most of which you probably already own, used in a straightforward way. You don’t need a dedicated soap-making setup, a separate workspace, or anything particularly specialist.
This article covers the equipment to make shampoo bars, what to look for when choosing each item, and a few things I learned the slightly harder way so you don’t have to.
The full equipment list
Before getting into the detail of each item, here’s the complete list at a glance:
- Digital kitchen scale (accurate to 0.1g)
- Large glass mixing bowl (5L or close to it)
- Medium saucepan
- Silicone spatula (semi-rigid, not ultra-flexible)
- Silicone ice cube tray moulds (large cavity, 5cm or similar)
- Small ramekin or similar vessel for decanting small ingredients
- Face mask (only needed if using SCI in powder form)
Technically you don’t need this at all, but I used it because I bought SCI in chip form first but find the chips a bit hard to use. If you buy SCI in powder form, you won’t need it
- Coffee grinder (for grinding SCI chips to powder)
That’s it. No specialist soap-making equipment, no caustic-rated containers, nothing that requires a dedicated purchase if you already have a reasonably equipped kitchen.
Item by item
Digital kitchen scale — the most important piece of equipment
A digital scale accurate to at least 1g is the minimum for syndet bar making. Accurate to 0.1g is significantly better and worth having if you’re going to make bars regularly.
The reason precision matters: your formula is percentage-based. Small inaccuracies in larger ingredients like SCI (which makes up 65% of the formula) compound into meaningful variation in the finished bar. More critically, the smaller ingredients like glycerine (5g per batch) and jojoba oil (13g per batch) are difficult to measure accurately on a scale that only reads to 1g increments. At 5g, a 1g overshoot is a 20% error.
I upgraded to a KitchenAid dual platform scale specifically because of a glycerine overshoot on an early batch. The dual platform design is useful for this kind of recipe: one larger platform for the main melt phase bowl and a smaller, more sensitive platform for the minor ingredients. Accurate to 0.1g on the smaller plate, which makes measuring 5g of glycerine or 13g of jojoba less stressful.
You don’t need to buy the same scale. Any digital kitchen scale accurate to 0.1g works. What to look for:
- 0.1g accuracy (sometimes listed as “0.1g graduation” or “precision scale”)
- Capacity of at least 2kg for the main bowl
- Stable platform that doesn’t tip with weight
A good 0.1g kitchen scale is available for $30 to $60 AUD from kitchenware stores and online. It’s the one item worth buying specifically for this if you don’t already own one.
Large glass mixing bowl
Your primary mixing vessel for the melt phase. Glass is the right material for several reasons: it’s non-reactive with cosmetic ingredients, it tolerates heat without warping or leaching, it’s easy to clean thoroughly between batches, and you can see exactly what’s happening inside it from all angles during the melt phase. This matters when you’re watching for the visual cues that tell you when a phase is complete, particularly the cetyl alcohol pellets which require patience to melt fully.
Size matters here. You need a bowl large enough to sit comfortably over your saucepan without touching the water, with enough room inside to stir the melt phase without the mixture climbing the sides. A bowl in the 3 to 5 litre range is appropriate for a full 531g batch. My largest bowl is around 3L and sits in the saucepan without touching the water which is exactly what you want for an effective double boiler.
Most standard glass mixing bowl sets include a bowl in this size range. If you’re buying specifically, look for a wide-based, heavy glass bowl rather than a narrow, lightweight one — stability on the saucepan matters during stirring.
Medium saucepan
Your saucepan is the bottom half of your double boiler. Its job is to hold a few centimetres of water at a gentle boil, creating the steam that heats the glass bowl above it. The saucepan size needs to be matched to your bowl, the bowl should sit within at least a third of the saucepan, resting on the rim.
Any medium saucepan from your existing kitchen kit will work as long as the glass bowl sits in it correctly. This is not a purchase you need to make.
Silicone spatula, and why the flexibility matters
This is the one piece of equipment where I have a specific and hard-won opinion: do not use an ultra-flexible silicone spatula for syndet bar making.
The melt phase mixture reaches a thick, mashed-potato-like consistency as it cools. A very bendy, thin silicone scraper (the kind that’s excellent for folding cake batter) doesn’t cut the mustard in this mixture. You end up working harder than you should, the mixture cools faster than ideal while you’re fighting the spatula, and you have less control over pressing it into the moulds.
A semi-rigid silicone spatula, one with a thicker, stiffer blade rather than a thin flexible one, handles the mixture significantly better. It gives you the leverage to scrape the bowl cleanly and press the mixture into mould cavities with control. I learned this by trying a very flexible scraper first and finding it simply didn’t have enough resistance to move the thick mixture effectively. The spatula I use now has a blade with meaningful rigidity: it flexes, but it pushes back.
Both types look similar in product photos online, so the easiest way to assess before buying is to flex the blade between your fingers. If it bends almost flat with minimal pressure, it’s too flexible for this application.
Most kitchen stores stock both types. A good semi-rigid silicone spatula is $10 to $20 AUD and available anywhere kitchenware is sold.
Silicone ice cube tray moulds
Your moulds determine the shape and size of your finished bars. Silicone is the right material for syndet bar moulds for a straightforward reason: the bars need to be pushed out rather than tipped out, and silicone flexes to release the bar without deforming it. A rigid plastic tray requires more force to release the bar, which risks squishing or cracking a bar that isn’t yet fully hardened.
For bar size, a large cube cavity of around 5cm on all sides produces a bar of approximately 100g which I find to be the right size for practical use and a reasonable lifespan. A bevelled base (slightly angled edges rather than sharp 90-degree corners) makes release easier and gives the finished bar a cleaner appearance.
A six-cavity tray is ideal for a full 531g batch, filling five of the cavities cleanly. For smaller trial batches (which I totally recommend for any new recipe or formula variation before committing to a full batch – don’t make a massive batch first like I did! I now test two bars first, as I did with the normal hair formula.) a smaller tray or simply filling fewer cavities works just as well.
The moulds I use were originally bought for a Minecraft birthday cake, which I mention only because it illustrates that you don’t need to buy specialist soap moulds. Any large-cavity silicone ice cube tray with dimensions around 5cm per cavity will do the job. These are available from kitchenware stores and online from around $10 to $20 AUD.
What to avoid: very small cavity trays produce bars that are too small to be practical and that dissolve quickly in the shower. Rigid plastic trays are harder to release without damage. Tray materials other than silicone are generally not worth the effort.
I am currently preferring a general cube shape over a general oval/oblong shape because the bars tend to last a bit longer. I think this is because when oblongs reach closer to the end they’re more likely to snap. More on storage and bar shape here.
Small ramekin
A single standard kitchen ramekin serves as a decanting vessel for small liquid ingredients. Glycerine and jojoba oil are both added to the formula in small quantities (5g and 13g respectively) and pouring these directly from their original containers onto a scale gives you less control than decanting a small amount into a ramekin first and adding from there.
For glycerine specifically, the viscosity makes pouring from a large bottle imprecise. Decanting into a ramekin ensures you don’t spoil the mixture by overshooting the weight of one ingredient compared to the others already in the bowl. An eye dropper or small pipette is an even better solution for the smallest quantities (on my list for future batches!) but a ramekin is a completely adequate starting point.
The ramekin also serves as the mixing vessel for the second phase – tthe kaolin clay and jojoba oil are combined directly in the ramekin before being added to the melt phase. One vessel, two jobs, one less thing to wash.
Any standard kitchen ramekin works. You almost certainly already own one.
Coffee grinder
SCI (the primary surfactant in syndet bars) is available in Australia almost exclusively in chip/flake or powder form rather than the noodle form specified in many international recipes. The chips melt unevenly if used whole: the bottom of the bowl melts while the chips on top cool the mass down from above, producing a lumpy, incompletely melted melt phase.
I used chips in my first recipe but decided to grind them to a fine powder for subsequent batches. I will buy powdered moving forward. But a three-second burst in a coffee grinder turns the chips into a consistent fine powder that melts evenly and produces a smoother melt phase and better finished bars.
You don’t need to buy a new coffee grinder for this. A thoroughly cleaned existing grinder works fine, just be sure to clean it before and after use. If you’re buying one specifically, a basic blade grinder available for $20 to $40 AUD is more than sufficient. You don’t need a burr grinder or anything with precision settings. You just need something that turns chips into powder quickly.
One thing to note: SCI powder is a fine particulate that shouldn’t be inhaled. Put the face mask on before opening the grinder after use.
Face mask
The only safety-specific item on the list and the only one that distinguishes syndet bar making from standard kitchen work.
SCI in powder form (whether bought as powder or ground from chips) is a fine particulate that shouldn’t be inhaled. A standard disposable face mask worn during the grinding step and while handling the powder before it’s wet is all that’s required. A sensible precaution rather than a response to a dangerous substance.
I make my bars when the kids are at school or in bed, not because SCI is acutely dangerous, but because if I’m wearing a mask, they probably should be too. And who wants to wrangle kids into face masks in their own home?
Any standard disposable face mask works. If you’ve kept any from the last few years, they’re perfectly adequate.
What you don’t need
It’s worth being explicit about what the equipment list doesn’t include, because a lot of soap-making content implies you need more than you do.
Dedicated equipment that never touches food again: not needed. Syndet bars don’t involve lye or any caustic ingredients. Your glass bowl, saucepan, spatula and ramekin can go straight back into regular kitchen use after washing.
A thermometer: useful but not essential. The melt phase is managed by visual cues rather than temperature targets. If you have a kitchen thermometer and want to use it as a cross-reference while you’re learning the visual cues, that’s fine. But it’s not a required purchase.
Specialist soap moulds: not needed. Large-cavity silicone ice cube trays do the job equally well at a fraction of the price of dedicated soap moulds.
Safety goggles or caustic-rated gloves: not needed. This is not a lye recipe. Standard kitchen hygiene (wash your hands after handling, keep ingredients away from eyes) is the full extent of the safety requirements beyond the face mask.
A stick blender: not needed and not recommended. The melt phase mixture doesn’t benefit from high-speed blending and the cleanup is unnecessarily complicated for a recipe that only needs a spatula.
Total equipment cost if starting from scratch
If you own nothing and need to buy everything:

In practice, most people already own the saucepan, bowl, spatula, ramekin, and face masks — which brings the realistic startup cost for dedicated purchases down to around $60 to $100 AUD for the scale, moulds, and grinder.
Given that a full batch of five bars costs approximately $14 -$17 AUD in ingredients (depending on pack sizes) and replaces roughly $100 worth of commercial shampoo over the same period, the equipment pays for itself within the first two to three batches. The full ingredient cost breakdown is here.
Before your first batch

Making conditioner bars: what changes and what doesn’t
If you’ve made a syndet shampoo bar and want to move on to conditioner bars, the good news is that almost everything on this list carries across unchanged. Same scale, same double boiler setup, same silicone moulds, same spatula, same ramekin for the second phase. You don’t need to buy anything new to make your first conditioner bar…with one exception.
The thermometer is no longer optional.
The reason is D-panthenol, the ingredient responsible for shine and elasticity in the finished bar. D-panthenol degrades above 65°C, which means the second phase (the glycerine, kaolin clay, and D-panthenol mixture) must be added to the melt only once it has cooled to 65°C or below. Not approximately. Not by feel. By measurement.
Adding the second phase too early is the most common conditioner bar formulation error and produces a bar with reduced performance that you won’t be able to see or smell, it’ll just quietly not work as well as it should. A thermometer costing under $20 prevents this entirely. If you don’t already own one, this is the time to buy it.
What you don’t need:
The coffee grinder mentioned above is for grinding SCI chips to powder. Conditioner bars contain no SCI so no grinder needed. Everything else on the “what you don’t need” list applies equally to conditioner bar making.
